You will need to create a prototype so you can playtest the game for potential refinement. You don't want to make elaborate models with expensive materials. Just stick to paper, cardstock & cardboard with relatively basic models so you can make changes fairly quickly with fairly low costs.
You will want to playtest your game with various players of various skill levels so that you can find flaws with your rules (& gameplay) as well as to see how "fun" the game is so you can better refine things.
That's pretty much it. You could watch Tabletop Deathmatch on YouTube to see how some other designers did things & potential flaws or issues that came up with the judges as a way to improve your prototype. Hope this helps!
