H₃BO₃ + H₂O → H₃O⁺ + H₂BO₃⁻

In the above reaction, H₃BO₃ is a proton donor which loses a proton (hydrogen ion) to form H₂BO₃⁻.
H₃BO₃ → H⁺ + H₂BO₃⁻

According to Bronsted-Lowry acid-base theory, H₃BO₃ is an acid and H₂BO₃⁻ is its conjugate base.
