Why do stores push proprietary brands?
And what is the benefit of having consumers buy more proprietary brands?

Store brands usually cost more then the no name or no frills brands, also some times they're better quality.
Some sales associates have to make a certain amount of money in the time they're working. The more they can sell of a brand that's higher in price, the faster they reach their sales goals and management is usually happier with the associate that can reach their sales goals.
