People dumb themselves down. The smart phones are tools. WE are responsible AND accountable for how we choose to use or not use our tools.

Yes. I don't pay attention to where I'm going, cuz it tells me where to go. I don't know anyone's phone number. I don't type, let alone spell correctly. Undoing years of schooling one app at a time

No. They provide opportunity to save time & learn more but people don’t really take advantage of that. Instead they let smart phones rob them of face to face social interactions.

A device can not dumb you down. I have owned desk top computers, handheld computers, laptops and cell/smartphones. I can remember most important phones numbers and addresses, even those I have not called or sent a card or letter to in months. Now I'm older that you are in sure, 60s so it may be due to how I learn and remember things or just how my mind is.
So if certain people are lazy and can't retain information that most might consider common knowledge, that says more about them, than it does their device usage.

They distract people, and they are destroying town centres. If everyone switched their phones off for a week it would cause a shock wave.

No but I have my suspicions about cable "news" and "reality" TV.
At least not any more than Encyclopedias, Glossaries, and dictionaries dumbed people down by making things easier to look up reducing the need to remember as much.
I think with Youtube and recipe websites they may have reduced sales of cookbooks.
