When gasoline burns in an automobile engine,nitric oxide is formed from oxygen and nitrogen. Nitric oxide is a major air pollutant. High temperatures such as those found in a combustion engine are needed for the following reaction.
N2(g)+O2(g)<---->2NO(g)
K for the reaction is 0.01 at 2000°c. If 4.0mol of N2, 0.1mol of O2, and 0.08 mol of NO are placed in a 1.0L vessel at 2000°c, predict which reaction will be favored.

N₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌ 2NO(g) …… K = 0.01

Reaction quotient, Q = [NO]² / ([N₂] [O₂]) = 0.08² / (4.0 × 0.1) = 0.016 > K
To make Q equal to K, the numerator of Q ([NO]²) should decrease and the denominator (([N₂] [O₂]) should increase.
In other words, the equilibrium position should shift to the left.

Hence, the BACKWARD reaction is favored.
