Why don't kids tell their parents everything?

a lot of reason .. maybe they do but the parents refuse to understand/care/listen .. maybe they are not close with their parent, maybe their parents never really talk to their kid & interested in knowing what's happening in their lives ..

Because the parents never take bad news in stride! They panic like the world is ending. "Hey mom i got a tattoo!" and mom has a hysterical fit all around the house. Who wants to see that

they can think that the parent won't care so they shouldn't even bother. for example if a kid is really into a video game and wants to talk about it because it's something he likes, but the parent expresses little to no interest in what he has to say, he will likely not talk about things he likes with his parents again.
sometimes they're afraid of getting in trouble, especially if they've done something they're not supposed to be doing, such as underage drinking or having sex.
sometimes they're afraid of ridicule or abuse. for example if a boy wants to dress up as a princess for halloween or a costume day, or if a teenager realizes they're gay, they may hide that from their family for fear of being made fun of at best or hurt or abandoned at worst.
and of course some kids are just secretive
