Dog passed away (heart attack)?
Hi, my dog had a heart murmor which caused her heart to become so big that it was up against her ribs. She developed a lot of fluid which went to her stomach during the last few days of her life. She passed away on Tuesday and was meant to be getting euthanised that day at 5pm. Unfortunately, she passed away a few hours too early. She was walking and doing a cough that dogs normally do when they have a heart murmor. But this one she did sounded a lot worse. After she coughed she walked a couple steps and then collapsed. She was breathing for about a minute and then passed away.
My question is... Did she definitely die of a heart attack and how much pain was she in?

YES, A HEART ATTACK WAS IMMANENT. THERE WAS MORE A SENSE OF INCREASING WEAKNESS AND GIDDINESS, THAN PAIN.
BLESS HER FOR THE JOY SHE GAVE AND BE RELIEVED IT WAS NOT PAINFUL

She clearly died of heart failure. Coughing is a reflex of dogs [and humans] whose heart is not pumping enough blood. When the blood is not pumped fast enough, the body does not get enough oxygen, and they respiratory system reacts in the same way it usually does when there is a lack of oxygen - it coughs in an effort to get more oxygen to the lungs. But in this case, the cough does not help because the problem is in the circulatory system, not the respiratory system.
I don't think there was much pain; the lack of oxygen would gradually cause him to lose consciousness, before dying.
Likely heart attack. She may have had some pain but she didn't suffer. Sorry for your loss.
I am very sorry for your loss.
She had probably been uncomfortable for some time. Not even a vet can tell you if she definately died of a heart attack, even if they did a necropsy.
I suggest rather than focus on regrets that you focus on how much you love your dog and the happy moments you had together.
No matter how the life of a pet ends, you ALWAYS second guess yourself and have doubts and wonder what you could have done differently / better. Try to not focus on that sort of negative thing. It doesn’t help anything and will just make you miserable.
Such a sad loss, but she made the decision (euth.) for you, so be grateful for that. At least she was at home and it was most probably quick much as up to when this happened, she could quite possibly have been in some degree of pain.
If you really have a need to know whether it was her heart, you could have a necropsy done, but not only will that cost, it won't bring her back. You knew what was going on, so I'd let this loss rest there.
Sorry for your loss....Ask your vet, Your family veterinarian or a veterinary pathologist can perform a general necropsy.
Its called Congestive Heart Failure. Was the dog in pain? That I couldn't tell you.
Any pain she may have had is gone now. Think if it as a means of passing into the afterlife.
I'm not a dog healthcare expert, (I'm a human Healthcare expert) but it sounds like she had congestive heart failure. Heart murmurs dont usually cause problems. In humans, when your heart stops pumping very well, you get a lot of blood flowing backwards, that's called congestive heart failure or CHF. Depending on which side of your heart, it leads to fluid build up and a lot of swelling. Often in the lungs, which can lead to pneumonia and a pretty nasty cough.
Most people live okay with congestive heart failure, as long as they take blood thinners.
but they almost always die of a heart attack eventually, so it probably was a heart attack. Probably very sudden and probably a little discomfort without any pain.
