The compound NOCl decomposes to nitric oxide and chlorine according to the following equation?

2018-03-10 11:08 pm
2 NOCl g → 2 NO g + Cl2 g

suppose that 0.320 mol NOCl is placed in a 5.00-L flask at a given temperature. When equilibrium has been established, it is found that the concentration of NO is 0.0308 M. Calculate the equilibrium constant for this reaction.

[NOCl]ₒ = (0.320 mol) / (5.00 L) = 0.0640 M

____________ 2NOCl(g) __ ⇌ __ 2NO(g) __ + __ Cl₂(g) ___ Kc
Initial: ______ 0.0640 M _______ 0 M _________ 0 M
Change: ______ -2y M ________ +2y M _______ +y M
At eqm: __ (0.0640 - 2y) M ____ 2y M _________ y M

At eqm: [NO] = 2y = 0.0308 M, and thus y = 0.0154 M

At eqm:
[NOCl] = (0.0640 - 2×0.0154) M = 0.0332
[NO] = 0.0308 M
[Cl₂] = 0.0154 M

Equilibrium constant, Kc = [NO]² [Cl₂] / [NOCl]² = 0.0308² × 0.0154 / 0.0332² = 0.0133
