An object of mass 2.98 kg, moving with an initial velocity of 4.96 i hat m/s, collides with and sticks to an object of mass 3.10 kg with an initial velocity of -3.32 j m/s. Find the final velocity of the composite object.

Along the i direction :
Final total momentum = Initial total momentum
(2.98 + 3.10) × (i component of final velocity) = 2.98 × 4.96i + 3.10 × 0
i compound of final velocity = 2.43i

Along the j direction :
Final total momentum = Initial total momentum
(2.98 + 3.10) × (j component of final velocity) = 2.98 × 0 + 3.10 × (-3.32j)
j compound of final velocity = -1.69j

Final velocity = 2.43i - 1.69j

Initial momentum M :
M = √(2.98*4.96)^2+(3.10*3.32) =18.0 kg*m/sec
final velocity V = M/(m1+m2) = 18/(2.98+3.10) = 2.96 m/sec
