Consider the following reaction at a certain temperature:
Ni(s) + 4CO(g) ↔ Ni(CO)4(g)
An equilibrium mixture contains 0.50 mol Ni, 0.020 mol CO and 0.010 mol Ni(CO)4, all in a 2.0 L container. What is the value of Kc for this reaction?

a) 5.0 x 105
b) 2.0 x 106
c) 2.0 x 103
d) 6.3 x 104
e) 1.3 x 105

Ni(s) + 4CO(g) ⇌ Ni(CO)₄(g) …… Kc
For the above heterogeneous equilibrium, Ni(s) is not shown in the equilibrium law.

[CO] = (0.020 mol) / (2.0 L) = 0.010 mol/L
[Ni(CO)₄] = (0.010 mol) /(2.0 L) = 0.0050 mol/L

Kc = [Ni(CO)₄] / [CO]⁴ = (0.0050) / (0.010)⁴ = 5.0 × 10⁵

The answer: a) 5.0 × 10⁵
