what device do i use to measure the transmittance and absorbance of light of a sample?

say i have a sample of coloured solution and i want to measure how much light is being absorbed by the solution and how much light is transmitted through it. do i use a colorimeter, spectometer, spectrophotometer etc?

Measure transmittance and absorbance....That would be spectrophotometer. It has a light source, a way of breaking the light into various wavelengths which shine through a sample and measure the amount of light either transmitted or absorbed. A spectrometer is a device that measure only the wavelength of light. A colorimeter is a poor-man's spectrophotometer. Instead of a device to produce light of different wavelengths, it uses a number of colored filters to produce light with a narrow range of wavelengths.
Got $800+ ..... get a spectrophotometer
or for $200+ ... get a colorimeter
