I am finding English very difficult, because it has so many synonyms. For example, can you clarify the differences between patio, terrace and balcony.

Don't they mean the same?

patio / terrace --- an area of flat blocks or concrete next to a house, (where people can sit ,relax, eat, ....)

Difference between patio & terrace :-
patio = "of the East" courtyard (院子，天井)
terrace = "of the West" platform (露台，平台)

balcony(陽台) --- a platform(平台) on the outside of a building, ABOVE GROUND LEVEL, with a wall or railing(欄杆) around it.

Note : a balcony in a theatre/cinema(劇院/影院) --- an area of seats above the main seating area.
