Is there a way around activation locked on iPad?

So it's my iPad but I don't have access to the old email I used when I set up my ipade because it was an email through at&t. At&t won't let you have access to your email unless you're a customer (which I'm not), this being locked out of my iPad. I know the email and password. I can't even get onto the iPad anymore, it's rest but it won't even let me set it up like a new iPad because it's locked. Is there a solution to this? Would Apple be able to assist? Thanks

What made you think AT&T would let you keep that email address once you ceased to be their customer?

Your best hope is to contact your local Apple store and see if there's anything they can do if you come in with your ID.
