Molarity Determination of Alcohol?

2018-02-06 9:25 am
The concentration of ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH) in the blood was
measured to be 2.0 ppb. Find the molarity of alcohol. We're assuming the density of blood is 1.0 g/mL.

I know molarity is mol/L, but I'm unsure what I'm supposed to do with the ppb.

Molar of C₂H₅OH = (12.0×2 + 1.0×6 + 16/0) g/mol = 46.0 g/mol
1 ppb = 1 × 10⁻⁹

Mass of 1 L (1000 mL) of blood = (1000 mL) × (1.0 g/mL) = 1000 g
Mass of C₂H₅OH in 1 L of blood = (1000 g) × (2.0 × 10⁻⁹) = 2.0 × 10⁻⁶ g
No. of moles of C₂H₅OH in 1 L of blood = (2.0 × 10⁻⁶ g) / (46.0 g/mol) = 4.3 × 10⁻⁸ mol
Molarity of C₂H₅OH = (4.3 × 10⁻⁸ mol) / (1 L) = 4.3 × 10⁻⁸ mol/L (to 2 sig. fig.)
