Ok so im 18 working as a receptionist at a car dealership i get paid bi-weekly and my paychecks come out to about $500 (give or take) the only thing i have to pay for is my gas and food and any repairs i might need on my vehicle and even then i get a discount. my issue is I SUCK AT SAVING MONEY. when i get paid i move about $3/400 to my savings but i have a bad habit of moving it back into my checking account in small increments of 10 - 50 $. i want to save up my money to get a new car and still have money left over so can someone please tell me how i can start saving better! (also i bank with suntrust if that helps)

The term is called "discipline". Stop spending your money on crap that you don't need. Learn to identify your wants vs your needs. Buy what you NEED, limit your spending on your wants. What you can do is move some of your money into a 401(k) or similar. You can't take that money out without paying a steep penalty (except for certain, limited situations).

Open a savings account at a different bank. When you have to make a special trip to withdraw savings (rather than clicking a few buttons on the computer) you will be less likely to do so

You are putting too much into savings. Start with 10 to 20 percent of your paycheck. Put the passbook, debit card or checkbook for that account somewhere that it is hard for you to get to. It also helps some people to attach a picture of their goal (in your case, a car)where you will see it any time you decide you want a few bucks on something you do not really need. Take a look at everything you are spending money on and decide what is necessary and what is optional and then start cutting back on your optional expenses.

So open a new account where you put $150 into and don't touch it

The thing is, if you don't, nobody else will.

Sounds like a personal problem. You just need to decide what it is you really want (immediate gratification or a car in the future) and act accordingly. Also, pay green cash for everything (under $50 for sure) to get the feel for the real value of money.

so how much does your gas food and repairs cost?

lets say 400/month out of the 1000 you get paid

so whats the point of putting 6-800/month into savings? - when you know you MUST transfer a large chunk of it back again to pay the 400 and have some to spend
try putting say 200.month (100 every 2 weeks) into savings leaving 400 for the gas, food etc and 400 to spend

If you have an income and dont spend it all whats left by definition are savings

you need to make sure the money you get gets allocated to the bills you have to pay, nothing is open to use the money until you make sure the bills are covered, then you might find the money left over is not enough to do anything with unless you put it aside for a better day later on
