Let, for example, the size of the original pasta packet be 80 units.

Increasing its size by one quarter means it becomes 100 units in size.

Reducing this new size by one quarter would mean we would end up with a packet size of 75 - smaller than the original.

Lets start with a size 12. We i incewase one-quarter or by 3o get 13. then we reduce by one- - quarter or 15 X/ 1/4 or 15/4 or 3.75 u subtracting this from 15 we get 11.75

Just try it out.

Let x be the amount of pasta before any changes were done.

If you increase the size by 25%, then the new amount is the old amount multiplied by 1.25, so:

1.25x

Then if you decrease that from 25% of what it is now, you multiply it by 0.75 (as there is 75% of it left), so:

1.25 * 0.75x

Now simplify to get:

0.9375x

The new box is smaller than the original after the two size changes.

This may be confusing to some because you have 3 sizes involved:
A = original size
B = 2nd size after increase
C = 3rd size after reduction.
Increasing it by one quarter means the B is 5/4 X A
Then decreasing it by 1/4 means C is 3/4 X B = 3/4 X 5/4 X A.
Now just multiply that out. Is it less than A or more than A?
