Why aren’t animals killed humanely in the food industry?

I definitely don’t want to become vegan or anything but I can’t help but feel sickended by the fact that animals are killed inhumanely in their masses everyday. The thing that sickened me most was that countries (other than the U.K. and I believe the EU) grind male chicks alive. I don’t understand why they don’t just free the male chicks instead of culling them. Is it also true that halal meat is from animals who have their throats slit whilst they hang upside down alive? Is there really no humane way of food production? I also don’t understand restaurants that let you eat live crabs or squid or even octopus?! Same goes for chefs who throw a living crab or lobster into boiling water instead of humanely killing it first. Is there anything being done to change this?

It's worse, they don't throw lobster in boiling water. They heat the water up as it is in there so it dies screaming in agony!
You either have to accept what they do or take a stand against it, by refusing to eat it. There is no middle of the road really !

Why aren't animals killed humanely in nature? Why do carnivores eat their prey alive? Why do lions eat baby lambs?
Food industry animals are killed MUCH MORE humanely that 99.9% of the other animals not eaten by humans on this planet!
Humans don't eat most animals alive and when they do it is no different then how they are eaten in the wild. A chick being thrown into a grinder is no different than a fox grinding them up in their muzzle. Actually I bet the grinder kills the chicks a lot cleaner than a carnivore. Male chicks don't lay eggs or grow large enough to make economical meat. The chicken industry already has mountains of chicken crap they have to dispose of doubling that load of crap and wasting the feed and farm space to make more poop is a waste of money and harder on the environment.

Because MILLIONS of male chickens introduced unchecked into an environment will DESTROY IT! Those birds will be competing against other animals that have an environmental purpose and the ability to breed. A bunch of male chickens would depleted the food supply until they died off because they can't breed but in the mean time they would displace animals that could have breed except for the lack of food. This will also damage the local carnivore population because suddenly there will be an over abundance of prey this will encourage an unnatural growth in the carnivore population until all the chickens are gone then they will over predate the natural animals that are left and then die back themselves.

First of all, NOT all male chicks. Only some of the males born that are an egg laying breed. some are needed for reproduction: sperm to hatch more chicks must come from somewhere.
The males of meat chickens are also not killed and are raised for meat, just like the females.
As to freeing the males, the problem is, they still need care and feeding as babies. Who wants to spend money raising male babies that will be too scrawny for meat purposes(which happens to be the case with egg laying breeds). thats no different than planting a bunch of cucumber plants that only produce male flowers...without female flowers, you are watering and weeding a vine that produces NOTHING. Are you going to raise them? Of course not.

Because they are unimportant and don't matter. I'm not willing to pay more just so some pig gets a better life.

I'm pretty sure lobsters are cooked like that because they have bacteria on their flesh, the cooking process minimizes the risk of food poisoning...
It would cost them money to keep the male chicks alive... I'm not sure about the grinding part though.

I think they stun pigs and cows before they kill them so they are unconscious. And I think they shoot them... I think there is a law that livestock has to be rendered insensible to pain before they're killed.
