For the first six months, newborn should be exclusively breastfeed. This means even water is not allowed to be given to the newborn.

If you feed your baby with formula milk, no water should be given as well. You should follow the recommended ratio of water to formula milk given by the manufacturer.

Water can be given once your baby starts to eat solid food.

First 6 months You are not suppose to give water to newborn. Once your baby is 6 months old, it's okay to give him sips of water when he's thirsty.

There's not a pediatrician alive who is going to recommend that a newborn should NOT be given sips of water, in addition to milk. Water is vital to a human being's health. I have no idea of where these new mothers are coming up with the idea that a newborn doesn't need water, or that water is harmful to them. That must be something they've read on the internet, because it's sure not anything a doctor is going to tell them.
