When should I buy and start using a dehumidifier in my basement?

I want to start putting stuff in my unfinished basement that has insulation hanging from the ceiling and have cement floors and walls. The insulation makes the room warm in the winter and hot in the summer. Currently it is 50 degrees down there and the humidity is at 55% . Only read online dehumidifiers are used in the summer? When do i start using one? Only want to use it when necessary. what humidity level should i keep the room at?

dehumidifier can be used all season long as is needed. Many have settings so you can set the level you wish, and it will only run to maintain that level. Do your research before buying, they are not all created equal and many struggle to run more then a year or two. Since it will be in the basement, out of sight out of mind, you also need to get one that can be connected to a drain as opposed to emptying it and such. Considering it is a basement, you may also need a condensation pump for that drainage system that you are working out.

Purchase a humidity gauge to help you make a determination. They costs around $5.00.

Humidifiers have dials to set. Play with it till you like it.
