I never 'gap' my spark plugs. Just put them in straight from the box. Is this OK or should I get some feeler gauges?

Get the gauges.

That's foolish, they need to be gapped before you install them. You cannot trust them to be correct out of the box since one type of plug is often used on multiple vehicles, each requiring a different gap. Don't just get a "feeler gauge", get a proper gapping tool that allows you to bend the electrode(s) properly.

I have found a few new plugs that may have been banged around in the box from shipping or handling and gap was wrong

They do need to be gapped before you put them in, just to make sure their right.

I would rather do it right the first time vs having to come back and do it again,.

You should at least check the gap. The gap may be right out of the box (it often is with iridium plugs, in which gaps tend not vary as much from one vehicle to another as copper plugs do) but it may not be. I haven't had to adjust the gap in my plugs for many years but that is not something you can bet on.

Should be fine. I seldom check mine
The only time I would check, is if I'm having a misfire

Guess it depends on what type of spark plug you are buying. Platinum and Iridium spark plugs com pre-gaped and you may damage the electrode if you mess around with a spark plug gaping tool.

if we are using plugs supplied for our car eg from a main dealer .then they ought to come at right gaps. if we source from a motor factor or alternative plug maker..then check gaps.

Newer cars have iridium spark plugs which usually don't need to be re-gapped. GM dealerships use a circular gapping tool. The outside diameter is wedged shaped with numbers in thousandths from .020 - .100 thousandths. Mechanics simply slide this tool between the electrodes to check the gap of old or new spark plugs. This tool is sold at any auto parts store.

The one thing I learned after rebuilding an entire engine is to triple check your tolerances. Now a poor sparkplug gap won't immediately ruin the engine but it's also not good for it. But why not get or rent or borrow the right tools to do the job right? After all, then you don't have to worry about whether you did it right or wrong.
