Smoking on board the ship is strictly prohibited. Smoking is permitted in designated areas only which are located on the open deck. Please use the ashtrays and do not throw cigarette butts overboard as they may be swept by wind into the car decks and cause a fire.

Smoking on board ship is FORBIDDEN except in designated areas. Designated areas are only on the open desk and contain signage: Designated Smoking Area. DO NOT throw cigarette butts overboard. The wind may blow a butt back onto the ship and cause a fire. Dispose of your cigarette butts ONLY IN THE ASHTRAYS PROVIDED.

Smoking on board the ship can't be both strictly prohibited and permitted in designated areas. Try this "Smoking on board this ship is strictly prohibited unless in a designated area. Designated areas are located on the open deck. Please use the ashtrays provided and do not throw cigarette butts overboard as they may be swept into the car decks and cause a fire."

"on board the ship" means ANYWHERE on the ship. Whether on an open-air deck or inside a cabin, they're both "on board" the ship. So saying "Smoking is permitted in designated areas..." after "Smoking on board the ship is strictly prohibited" doesn't make sense.

"Smoking on board the ship is strictly prohibited. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas, which are located on the open deck. Please use the ashtrays provided and do not throw cigarette butts overboard, as they might be swept by wind onto the car decks and cause a fire."

I don't know what your question is. You didn't actually ask one.

By the way, the statement you posted makes no sense. If smoking on board is strictly prohibited, why are there designated smoking areas? If you're having trouble understanding it, it's not because of your English. It's because it's written by an idiot.

Only smoke where the signs tell you it's okay to. Be responsible and put finished cigarettes in ashtrays. Don't start a fire on the ferry that could kill you and everyone else on board.

It sounds like their sign is too confusing. Maybe just ask someone if you can smoke on board.
