A mineral is a chemical compound that is normally crystalline and has been formed by geologic (rather than biologic) processes. A mineral may be a "solid solution" with variable chemical composition, such as the olivine group (Mg,Fe)2 SiO4, where the ratio of magnesium to iron could in theory vary from zero to infinity.

A rock is a solid object or substance made of one or more mineral compounds.
