Carbon and oxygen can form CO and CO2 in the following ways: 1.33g of O combines with 1g of C (a ratio of 1.33:1) to form CO and 2.66g of O combines with 1g of C (a ratio of 2.66:1) to form CO2. What is this an example of?

1. Dalton’s Law
2. Law of Mass Conservation
3. Law of Definite Proportions

Refer to the reaction between C and O. When combining with a fixed mass of 1 g of O :
Mass ratio of C = 1.33 : 2.66 = 1 : 2
This is a ratio of small whole numbers.
Hence, this is an example of the law of multiple proportions.

The law of multiple proportions states that :
If two elements form more than one compound between them, then the ratio of the masses of the second element which combine with a fixed mass of the first element will be ratio of small whole numbers

The answer: 4. Law of Multiple Proportions
