Not true. All cable companies now use encrypted signals, and only the cable company's equipment can decrypt them.

The era where you could buy a cable box and get "free cable" ended in the 80s. The era where you could bribe the cable guy to give you "free cable" ended around 2010.

Since you can't buy cable boxes any longer, you can't even move into a place and get "free cable" from the previous tenant's subscription.
