My brother got yelled at for trying to buy cigarettes in Walmart?

This confuses me. I am 17, i went to Walmart with my brother who is 26. I got a few makeup items and he got himself a shirt. We checked out at a counter and he asked for cigarettes. He showed his ID but then the lady said that she needed to see my ID. I don't smoke cigarettes. I'm not old enough secondly, obviously. So since i did have an ID and showed her, she said he couldn't buy cigarettes with me and they would refuse him to buy cigarettes if he ever tries again. All of this because i'm a minor. So actually, we left and he bought vodka and cigarettes at the liquor store. Is that really their job? Because i remember being with him and even my mother when they bought cigarettes. It just really irritated me and we had to go across town to get them.

Yelling is unprofessional. They don't have to sell cigarettes. And he could have asked for a manager.

This turns out to happen at other Walmarts too so it must be the policy of Walmart. No it is not the law for a clerk to ask for ID of whoever is with the customer but each stores have their own policies.

Yea its policy... Modern times for ya. If you were with someone who clearly looked like your guardian or parent then they might have had better chances.

As the other guy said, next time just don't be together.

Not at all, in fact it might be illegal to refuse to sell cigarettes to a person simply because they have a minor with them. That's ridiculous! Many people buy cigarettes and wine and such when their kids are with them. The cashier shouldn't judge and jump to conclusions about who the cigarettes are for.

Walmarts stupid policy. He cant buy cigs while hes with a minor.

Next time, stand separately. And look like you're NOT together. Important.

I once went to a store and tried to buy something that required me to be over the age of 21. and when I went in with my brother who was only 20 at the time, they refused to sell the alcohol to me. So then we sent our uncle in to buy it, who was waiting in the car? They refused to sell it to him too, because they saw him with us.

So.... with dxckheads like walmart and certain states like UTAH that have strict laws when it comes to alcohol and tobacco distribution... you have to be VERY CAREFUL.
參考: Pro now. ;o) Thank God I live in California now. Where nobody really gives a crap. ;D But I still dont buy cigs from Walmarts. They PURPOSELY make it super expensive.

A lot of shops use an ID-everybody policy because it protects them against accusations of indirect selling to underage people.

And he didn't get "yelled at". He just got told no.

Yeah, it's the stores policy! They could get jailed or loose their job. In the uk our store policy is that if you look under 25 you got to proof that you're over 18 before buying anything! For instant today I brought a age restricted product (I'm 21) the man believed that i was over 16 although he didn't want to get in trouble by his store managers so he asked me if I got a proof of ID.

Clerks can get serious jail time for selling to under-age customers, and authorities do set up sting operations.

A store is under zero obligation to sell cigarettes to anyone. They are perfectly entitled to create an internal sales policy on age-restricted items that is more stringent than the law.

Checkout woman was in the wrong, your brother should have asked to see the manager.

She thought he was buying them for you. Legally he can buy them in your presence so she is in the wrong and you can make a complaint

Walmart (and their UK equivalent, ASDA) have an over 25 policy but it's ALWAYS a good idea to carry ID with you when you're going to buy age restricted items. (I learned that the hard way)

She was wrong. You should have complained to the manager. She had no right to do what she did.
