1. The corwed highways in the area make [commuting] difficult.
這裡的commuting是當作及物動詞make的受詞，是「動名詞」(gerund）。
字尾~ing的字有可能是「現在分詞」或「動名詞」（但也有兩者都不是的，如during是介系詞），要從上下文的關係才能判定。「動名詞」的用法類似「名詞」，是「動狀詞」（verbal）的一種，在句子裡可以當作動詞的「主詞」或「受詞」或「補語」，也可當作介系詞的「受詞」。
