Determine the pOH of each solution?

1) [OH−] = 2.5×10−9 M

Classify this solution as acidic, basic, or neutral.

2) [OH−] = 5.0×10−5 M

Classify this solution as acidic, basic, or neutral.

3) [OH−] = 1.0×10−7 M

Classify this solution as acidic, basic, or neutral.

QUESTION 2
Calculate [H3O+] for each solution.

1)
pOH = -log[OH⁻] = -log(2.5 × 10⁻⁹) = 8.6
As pOH > 7.0, the solution is acidic.

2)
pOH = -log[OH⁻] = -log(5.0 × 10⁻⁵) = 4.3
As pOH < 7.0, the solution is basic.

3.
pOH = -log[OH⁻] = -log(1.0 × 10⁻⁷) = 7.0
As pOH = 7.0, the solution is neutral.

QUESTION 2
1)
[H₃O⁺] = 10^(-pH) = 10^(-8.55) M = 2.82 × 10⁻⁹ M

2)
[H₃O⁺] = 10^(-pH) = 10^(-11.23) M = 5.89 × 10⁻¹² M

3)
[H₃O⁺] = 10^(-pH) = 10^(-2.17) M = 6.76 × 10⁻³ M

4)
[H₃O⁺] = 10^(-pH) = 10^(-1.22) M = 6.03 × 10⁻² M
