When oxygen supply is sufficient, carbon reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide. This is called complete combustion of carbon.
C(s) + O₂(g) → CO₂(g)

When oxygen supply is insufficient, carbon reacts with oxygen to form carbon monoxide. This is called incomplete combustion of carbon.
2C(s) + O₂(g) → 2CO(g)
