How do you justify, "poverty leads to crime"?
No man should be chastised if he is just trying to feed himself, within reason; but no man 'needs' a TV, or Stereo, or Microwave, or Computer, or Gold Watch, or Car, etc, etc, etc.
'Morality' does not disappear, automatically, just because a pair of shoes don't carry a brand name you prefer.
Televised dross is still dross if it's on a 12" screen, or a 50".
'Need' to see the game, but have no TV? - Errrr....hard luck!

With no tv, computer, phone or data plans where do you get information? Even government assistance and unemployment is ONLINE. Some of these are now necessities. We live in a digital world. Still, at the end of the day you need to ask yourself," Did I make the world a better place"?
Justify?? WTF!! Poverty CAUSES crime!!
TV, stereo and computer MAY not needed. If someone "needs to see the game" there are plenty of bars, pubs and clubs with televisions. Stereos aren't that expensive, though. Computers...it depends. MOST businesses don't do paper applications any more. From "big business" to the local corner store/gas station, all have their applications online now. Looking for a job without a computer can be extremely difficult. That said, of course, library cards are free, and they do allow you to use their computers with your card. So, while it's not *absolutely* needed, it is easier if you have your own...especially if you live in a rural area and you're looking for work.
A microwave is MUCH less expensive than buying a new oven or - in most cases - getting an old one repaired. A single part on an oven can be a couple hundred dollars while a new microwave can be as little as $25 or $30.
Cars, it depends on where you live. Out in the country where each block is a mile long? With no buses, getting to work - to the store, to doctor or dentist appointments, etc. - without a car would be impossible. Do you need a brand new, "this year's model" car? Of course not. But in that case, you DO need is a vehicle that runs well and can get you where you need to go without breaking down, stalling, etc.
If you go to the developing world, you well see people in shabbily built, over crowded homes, and inside you will find a nice flat screen TV. People value entertainment. They could have spent that money on food, but the TV lets them escape reality. I'm not sayings stealing such things is justifiable, of course, but it's no real surprise that it happens when you take into account human psychology.
