What is a negative impact of coal on society?

If a nation burns coal in an uncontrolled manner, death and diseases are negative impacts on society.
Fifty years ago the UK passed laws prohibiting burning coal in a way that produces smoke in most urban areas, which became smokeless zones. This was because statistical analysis over a number of years had shown that lung diseases and death were linked with burning coal. The calculations were complicated and difficult, but the results showed that people were dying because coal was being used as fuel. IIRC the associated deaths were around 12-18 per annum for a nation of about 52 million people. Also IIRC the research was backed up by similar data from other nations, like Germany, Denmark and Sweden.
It makes electricity and too many liberals use that to survive winter.
