Math Problem?
If Dr. Suzuki rides his bike to his office, he averages 12 miles per hour. If he drives his car, he averages 36 miles per hour. His time driving is 1/4 hour less than his time bicycling. How far is his office?
回答 (2)
Let d be the distance (in miles).
The time via the bicycle is d/12
The time via the car is d/36
The time via car is 1/4 hour less than via bicycle:
d/36 = d/12 - 1/4
Multiply both sides by 36 to get rid of fractions:
d = 3d - 9
2d = 9
d = 4.5 miles
Let the distance of the office is 'x' miles.
By bicycling, he takes x/12 hours to reach his office.
By driving car, he takes x/36 hours to reach his office.
Given, x/36 = x/12 - 1/4
or, x/12 - x/36 = 1/4 or,24x/36 1/4 or,2/3x = 1/4
x = 1/4 x 3/2 = 3/8 miles (Ans.)
