A mixture of 0.0375 mol of hydrogen gas and 0.0185 mol of oxygen gas in a closed container react to
form water. How many grams of water can form? Which reactant is in excess, and which reactant is
limiting?
Balanced Reaction: _________________________________________________________________

a. Which is the limiting reactant? Always show your work!

b. How many grams of zinc sulfide can be formed under the reaction conditions described? This would
be your theoretical yield.

c. A student performed this very experiment and produced 1.92 grams of zinc sulfide. What is the
student’s percent yield for the experiment?

Balanced equation : 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O

(a)
According to the above equation, mole ratio H₂ : O₂ = 2 : 1
If 0.0185 mol O₂ completely reacts, H₂ needed = (0.0185 mol) × 2 = 0.037 mol < 0.375 mol
Hence, H₂ is in excess, and O₂ is the limiting reactant.

(b) and (c) are parts of another question. No sufficient information is given.
