Football(soccer) question. How do you receive the ball if the passer is not in view or right behind you?

I play as a winger and I always have trouble receiving a through pass when the passer/midfielder is either right behind me or not in view. Do I have to look all the way behind me as im running? Or should the midfielder be able to pass right infront of me not to the back of my feet. I usually just make diagonal runs but sometimes I have to make straight ones.

You should even communicate with the midfielders like in training and on the pitch so you can work out how best to do this. In training you could say the hard work is done so get them to do this all the time. Practice practice practice.

You shouldn't be blindly running away from your teammate. You should be looking back and knowing what he is planning on doing. If he's trying to send you long, then you can start running. If you did it earlier, then you would end up offside unless you were way off the defender in which case I would question a long pass. (Honestly, sounds like a situation where you're just playing kick/long ball and hoping for the best so it's hard to give great advice.)
