my VCR only has 1 head but it works?

Yeah. Only Tasmanian VCRs have two.

My first vcr was a two head panasonic with sp-lp-slp speeds. The picture quality on SP speed was awful.

I wouldn't have thought a VCR could work with one head. But if it does work, I bet it doesn't work very well.

Does the spec sheet say one head or is that just your observation? All VCRs have 2 heads, one stationary which is for audio and control track. and one rotating drum for video and in some cases HiFi audio. If this is a recorder and not just a player, then there is a third head which is a full-track stationary erase head. If you don't know what to look for, it is hard to spot the location of all the heads. the rotating drum can have between 2 and 6 heads for video and in certain cases "flying erase".
