The atomic number of Cu is 29.

The ground state electronic configuration of Cu: 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 3d¹⁰ 4s¹

To form Cu²⁺ from Cu, the first electron is removed from 4s orbital, and the second from 3d.
Thus, the electronic configuration of Cu²⁺: 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 3d⁹

The simple electronic configuration of Cu²⁺: 2, 8, 17
