HCl and Na2CO3 are strong electrolytes , they dissociate into ions H+ , Cl- , Na + and CO3 2-. Ions produced are free to move throughout the solution. Ions with the opposite charges attract each other: H+ + CO3 2- + Cl- + Na+ ----> H2CO3 + Na+ + Cl- The carbonic acid is not stable, it dissociates into CO2 and H2O .

The CO32- ion is a base. H+ ions from HCl are gained by the carbonate ion to form carbonic acid, H2CO3
The H2CO3 formed decomposes into CO2 + H2O

2HCl + Na2CO3 ---> 2NaCl + CO2 + H2O
