Why are hipsters hated?

I was talking to an acquaintance about our favorite bands, and after I listed mine he asked if I was a hipster. I didn't even really know what a hipster was, other than how they dressed, so I was kinda confused. I just listened to music that I like, and dressed comfortably. I listen to indie/alternative rock, indie dance, indie pop, synthpop, electronic rock, punk etc. I don't like rap, R&B, country, or all the overplayed mainstream pop songs on the radio, so does that make me a hipster? Is there something wrong with my music taste? I always hear negative things about hipsters so I'm just wondering
