What are the oxidation states of the atoms that are in bold (and underlined!) in the following species/compounds?
The bold and underlined are F, B, Cl, S, and N in the following compounds.
F- (aq) [F]
Br2 (l) [B]
HCl (aq) [Cl]
MgSO4 (aq) [S]
Pb(NO3)2 (aq) [N]
Thank you!!

O.S. = oxidation state
In F⁻ :
The O.S. of the atom in a monatomic ion = the charge of the ion
Hence, the O.S. of F = -1
In Br₂ :
The O.S. of the atom in an element = 0
Hence, the O.S. of Br = 0
In HCl :
The sum of O.S. in a neutral compound = 0
(O.S. of H) + (O.S. of Cl) = 0
(+1) + (O.S. of Cl) = 0
Hence, O.S. of Cl = -1
MgSO₄ :
In the multi-atomic ions SO₄²⁻, the sum of O.S. = charge of the ion
(O.S. of S) + (O.S. of O) × 4 = -2
(O.S. of S) + (-2) × 4 = -2
Hence, O.S. of S = +6
In Pb(NO₃)₂ :
In the multi-atomic ions NO₃⁻, the sum of O.S. = charge of the ion
(O.S. of N) + (O.S. of O) × 3 = -1
(O.S. of N) + (-2) × 4 = -1
Hence, O.S. of N = +5
F- (aq) 1-
Br2 (l) 0
HCl (aq) 1-
MgSO4 (aq) 6+
Pb(NO3)2 (aq) 5+
