I got this question on my Instagram account and I do get this a lot.
In two words, Yes and No.
Generally speaking it is the MD that does most diagnostics in the US.
The Physicians Assistant (PA) may fulfill certain roles like this now to allow the MDs more time for more serious conditions.
However when I serve as a RN in summer camps we do a visual on boys as a hernia check.
This is generally not performed on girls since boys suffer hernias almost 3 to 1 over girls.
Unfortunately male patients are not accorded the same patient privacy that female patients demand.
So this is an important question and we try to follow as many privacy protocols as possible for both genders.
They could if need be. My doctor has a nurse and a physician assistant. The physician assistant is a women and she did my physical last time. When it came time for the testicle and hernia part she had me lower my pants and briefs just enough to check.
