What is going on in American horror story?

I am not caught up with the show but I am very confused as to why in each season the actors plays different characters. I'm confused as to why Zachary Quinto played the gay neighbor in the first season but then in the second season he's a doctor. Can someone please explain to me what's going on? Because I'm so lost with this storyline.

Each season is a different story with different characters. There is no connection to the seasons.It's basically a reboot each season

I always liked Sarah Paulson's characters but I could just slap the **** out of her character in Cult. She bugs me so much, I don't know if I can watch the whole season.

cause all the seasons have a different storyline it keeps the show interesting but since Jessica Lange left the season has went really downhill

Its anthology series. The show has a somewhat stable cast of actors for each season, but each season is a completely new story with a completely new setting

It's an anthology series. Each season is independent. Think of it like a local theater house - the same actors play different characters in different productions. They may be the hero in one, the villain in another, and a supporting character in a third production.

Every season is a completely different story. Seasons are unrelated. Some contain the same actors playing different characters.
