I am having difficulties getting the net ionic redox equation for a lab: Cu + HNO3 -> Cu(NO3)2 + H2O + NO2 The answer I get through using the half-reaction method is: Cu + 2H^1+ + 2HNO3 -> Cu^2+ + 2NO2 + 2H2O However, from a Google search, a link from a university (SFU) shows this net ionic equation: http://www.sfu.ca/~xinz/Env6teaching1.htm I am extremely confused and have to hand this in tomorrow, please help. Thank you.

The following steps show the balance of the ionic equation using half-reaction method :
Reduction half-reaction: 2H⁺ + NO₃⁻ + e⁻ → NO₂ + H₂O …… (*)
Oxidation half-reaction: Cu → Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ …… (#)

(*)×2 + (#), and cancel 2e⁻ on the both sides. The balanced ionic equation is:
4H⁺ + 2NO₃⁻ + Cu → 2NO₂ + 2H₂O + Cu²⁺

Add the dummy ions, 2NO₃⁻(aq) ions, on the both sides.
4H⁺ + 4NO₃⁻ + Cu → 2NO₂ + 2H₂O + Cu²⁺ + 2NO₃⁻

Group the compounds, 4HNO₃ and Cu(NO₃)₂.
(4H⁺ + 4NO₃⁻) + Cu → 2NO₂ + 2H₂O + (Cu²⁺ + 2NO₃⁻)

The balanced complete equation is as follows.
4HNO₃ + Cu → 2NO₂ + 2H₂O + Cu(NO₃)₂

This is the equation shown in the link. Note that it is NOT an ionic equation, but it is a complete equation (or known as molecular equation).

Cu + 4H^+ + 2NO3- ------> Cu^2+ + 2NO2 + 2H2O
