A length of tape is 135 centimeters long. It is cut into two pieces. The first piece is twice as long as the second piece. How long is the shorter of the two pieces of tape?

With ratios add both sides together and you have the number of parts:
It's a ratio of 2:1
2 + 1 = 3 parts.
Divide the total into 3 parts: 135/3 = 45
Each part is 45cm.
The two sections of tape are 90 cm and 45 cm.
If you remember to divide it into parts, it's easy.
