說明文的目的，是介紹人以知識，使人知其然，並知其所以然。如果再予細分，有解釋現象的，有解釋原因的，有介紹方法的。這一類的文章很簡單，只要能說得清楚，解釋得透澈，就達到了目的。
(一)說明文的特質：
1.真實的：說明文在介紹知識，因此不必要且不許可加些渲染的、誇張的話。只可以純客觀的，老老實實的報導。
2.充實的：說明文忌諱只說些空洞不著邊際的話。在寫作之先，便要妥為安排，把所要介紹的東西、動作、觀念、知識、現象等，用最簡潔的方法說出來。
3.確實的：說明文既然旨在介紹，用詞必須確實，千萬不可用模稜兩可的話。
4.踏實的：要把所要說明的東西，面面俱到介紹出來，儘管可以有偏重，但是不能有闕漏。
(二)說明文寫作的準備：
1.先分析它的內涵，越精密越好。
2.再甄別它的特點，在外表上有什麼不同。
3.再以科學方法，歸納分類。
4.根據所整理的材料，排列寫作次序。
(三)說明文一般的次第：
