Does a 20lb bond of paper really weigh 20lbs?

I read it then went to a store and picked 5 up at once with ease, but I can have trouble lifting a 50 lb weight that fast. 5 should've been 100lbs according to the "20 lb bond".

The weight refers to 500 sheets of 17" x 22" paper, which is four times the size of standard 8-1/2" x 11" typing paper; for example 500 sheets (one ream) of 20-lb. typing paper weighs 5 pounds.

No.
The weight relates to a ream of uncut paper of whatever bulk size the sheets are cut from.

European paper grades relate to the weight of one square metre of whatever paper.
Your "20lb" is equivalent to 75 grams per square metre.
