Am I Latino or Hispanic?

My parents and a vast majority of my family were all born and raised in Mexico, and I was born and raised in Texas. I can speak English and Spanish fluently. Which am I?

Latino means you are from Latin America or are of Latin American descent.

Hispanic means you speak Spanish natively.

So you are Latino because you are of Mexican descent, and you are Hispanic because you speak Spanish.

Keep in mind, however, that neither Hispanic nor Latino are races. In particular, since you're Mexican, most Mexicans are Native American or mestizo. Mestizos are people who are a mix of Native American and white. About 10-15% of Mexicans are white.

Hope I helped.

* The city of Latina is still located in Europe

It's still the mythical birth place of the Latins. It's often called Latium.

The Latins conquered the people of Hispania.

* Hispania was located in Europe

The word Hispanic was in use before Christ was born.

Look at the key on the map linked below. You'll see the term Hispanica, the meaning of the root word hasn't changed.

Hispania is not a synonym for Spain. It includes other modern countries too. Language was never consistent in Hispania. They even speak more than one Latin based language in modern Spain today.

Your parents come from Mesoamerican and you come from the United States of America, how are you anything other than American?

Latino and Hispanic are not races. Your race is Mestizo. While your nationality is American.

Your American of Mexican heritage.

Whatever other folk decide your are. Race, ethnicity and all other such nomenclature are purely subjective and arbitrary. People were not sent to the gas chambers because they were objectively Jewish or Roma or whatever, but becuase some German government official decided they were. Similar opinions, which may be mere hunches, will decide the grounds on which state police or federal or community law enforcement pull you over for "driving when not white". The official definition of a Hispanic is anyone with a Spanish last name. A distinction between a Hispanic and a Latino is whatever the user believes it to be, and in most cases a white, black, red or yellow American will not know and be unlikely to care.

You are Latino because you speak Spanish. Your nationality is American because that's where you were raised and your background is Mexican.

Latino by ethnicity, American by nationality. Hispanics are from Spain.
