I am translating a paragraph about landscape and urbanism and since I'm not a native speaker of English I find some phrases difficult to understand. What does the phrase 'were shaded by' mean? (does it mean that the protection from the sun was created by planting the trees or does it mean that the trees were used to hide the parking lots from sight so that they are less visible?) Here is the context:
Michel Desvigne and Christine Dalnoky’s implantation of a new TGV station outside Avignon in 1995 is typical in this regard, as are numerous other works executed by them in relation to public transit. In Avignon, plane trees were employed to reinforce the linear extent of the station, while the adjacent parking lots were shaded by rows of lime trees selected for their resemblance to the orchards of the surrounding apple-growing region, thereby integrating the station into the character of the existing landscape.

I'm wondering what "plane trees" means??"Shaded", as in: "were shaded by" means to give shade. This means: to block direct sunlight, or to block direct light, in my opinion.
It does NOT mean: to HIDE the parking lots from sight.

In my normal experience in Britain, when a tree is planted "to shade" an area, it is intended that protection from the sun is to be offered.
However, from the context of that paragraph I rather assume that the intention was to "screen" the offending parking lots, so that they would not look like a blot on the landscape. But it is hard to tell what the intention of the writer was in that case - he certainly should have made his point more clearly, whichever way he wanted you to understand it. My hunch is towards the "screening", since, just earlier, he mentions the linear nature of the planting, and later the integration with the landscape.
The writer of that book certainly did not write conventional British English as I generally see used.

'Shaded' is often a very literal thing, especially with visual effects as in various architectural types. I think it is literally that: The trees are casting a shadow over another (lower) object.

It means that the shadow of the trees prevented the sun's light from falling on at least a part of the parking lot, regardless of whether this were intended and planned for or not.

It means the trees gave shade from the sun. Shaded does not mean hidden.

Were shaded by means that the shadows of the trees covered the parking lot... It doesn't necessarily mean that it is hidden but covered by the shadow of the trees. (: hope this helped(:

the phrase means that the parking lot was protected from the sun, or in other words the trees were blocking the sunlight from reaching the parking lot
