The painkiller commonly known as aspirin is the chemical compound acetylsalicylic acid, of molecular formula C9H8O4. In 325 mg of aspirin: What is the mass (in milligrams) of just the oxygen atoms?

Mass of 1 mole of C₉H₈O₄ = (12.0×9 + 1.0×8 + 16.0×4) g = 180.0 g
Mass of O atoms in 1 mole of = (16.0 × 4) g = 64.0 g
Mass fraction of O atoms in C₉H₈O₄ = 64.0/180.0

Mass of O atoms in 325 mg of C₉H₈O₄ = (325 mg) × (64.0/180.0) = 116 mg (to 3 sig. fig.)
