In the chemical reaction:

Cu + 2AgNO3 → 2Ag + Cu(NO3)2

What is the limiting reactant if you start with 1.8 moles of copper and 2.0 moles of silver nitrate?

Initial no. of moles of Cu = 1.8 mol
Initial no. of moles of AgNO₃ = 2.0 mol

Cu + 2AgNO₃ → 2Ag + Cu(NO₂)₂
Mole ratio Cu : AgNO₃ = 1 : 2

When AgNO₃ completely reacts :
No. of moles of Cu needed = (2.0 mol) × (1/2) = 1.0 mol < 1.8 mol
Hence, Cu is in excess, and thus AgNO₃ is the limiting reactant.

Silver nitrate because
the molar ratios are 1 : 2
So by equivalence
1 : 2 :: 1.8 : 3.6
Hence 3.6 moles (AgNO3) is required , but you only haave 2.0 moles. Hence Silver Nitrate is the limiting reagent.
