Why can you not find the square root of numbers?

My calculator would say ERROR and my teachers would say "i". neither made sense, and my teachers n high school couldn't tell me why you cannot find the square root of a negative number.

A SQUARE is when you multiply a number by itself 3 x 3 = 9.

A positive number and a negative number are not the SAME number, so -3 x +3 is NOT = 9

But when two negative numbers are multiplied, the result is ALWASY positive. -3 X -3 = +9.

Since the ONLY way to get a negative number is to multiply a positive number AND a negative number, and a positive number is different from a negative number, so there is no way possible to get the square root of a negative number.

The STANDARD explanation is that "it is a rule of mathematics". That works for ALL mathematicians ans scientists, and so it should work for you too.

Calculators are used for calculation of real number. However, the square roots of negative numbers involves imaginary number, i,e, √(-1), or denoted as i.

In case of √(-N) where -N is a negative number (so that N is positive) :
√(-N)
= √[N × (-1)]
= √N × √(-1)
= √N × i
You can find √(N) by using a calculator, and then multiply the answer by i.

Example 1 :
√(-4)
= √[4 × (-1)]
= √4 × √(-1)
= 2i

Example 2 :
√(-13)
= √[13 × (-1)]
= √13 × √(-1)
= √13 × i
≈ 3.61i (to 3 sig. fig.)

Because no real number multiplied by itself can be negative.
We have invented imaginary numbers i to deal with this
i = √-1
Square root of -16 = ±4i

Because most calculators can't work with complex numbers (at least in the normal mode without modifications). The square root of -1 is i, thus the square root of a negative number is i times the square root of the positive version of that number

Calculators have limitations. If you know that it is a negative number then you put by hand i and find the square toot of the positive numbers. Advanced calculators give complex answers as (a, b). a as the real part and b as the imaginary. part. Here also you have to i by hand and write a+i b.

You can. But only in more advanced level mathematics which deals with "complex numbers". You obviously need to learn a lot more math before you get that far. You don't expect to learn elementary physics and then say "why can't I understand quantum physics" do you? The same applies to mathematics.
