Is it disrespectful to wear a military patch of a unit if I have never been in it?

I play airsoft, and I have a mil-sim and mil-spec loadout. I want to replicate a US Army Ranger. So I will buy Ranger Tabs and wear them. I am not actually claiming to be a Ranger, just trying to look like one.

And I specifically only look like one during these games. I never wear BDU's outside of these events. I also got into a fight with a kid who was wearing the American Flag wrong, because he refused to wear it correctly. I do not like to offend the military in any way until I am actually enlisted.

These clothes are a dime-a-dozen, with or without any insignia. They're sold at military surplus stores everywhere.

As far as being "disrespectful." There will always be someone who has something to say about what you do, believe, utter, etc. You can't please everyone, but you should not even try. You know your own motivations. Be your own person. Bending to the whims of everyone is not only foolhardy, it's impractical.

Valor means courage in battle. How in the world can you steal someone's courage? How can you possibly steal some moment from the past? That's like saying that wear a Chicago Cubs cap is stealing the celebration the Cubs had last fall.

You only have to start defining things to understand some of the silliness behind these laws and sentiments. You might have heard of the term "stolen valor." You should know that there is no such thing as "stolen valor." None. It does not exist. It only exists in the minds of people who want special treatment, which is (unfortunately) all too common today.

Laws against fraud already existed, so the Stolen Valor Act mostly duplicated existing law, and hence, was unnecessary and wasted resources. It's expensive to write a law because of the time spent by legislators, lawyers, etc. The law being litigated by courts also a huge waste of tax dollars.

This was all precipitated by people who think they are so special that a special law against fraud has to be created particularly for them. Pandering politicians step all over one another trying to appease these special snowflakes, mostly to be popular and win re-election.

In some circles and among fellow veterans and if you are a veteran then that might not be well regarded. You can try and play it off as not claiming to be one or having been one but some veterans won't see it that way.

Ranger Tabs do not identify a member of the 75th Ranger Regiment, and they are not unit patches at all. What you are actually looking for is a Ranger Scroll.

There's really no need for that particular detail, so save your pennies and just skip it.

Also, if you really are wearing a uniform that parallels what the Rangers actually wear downrange, I feel bad for your wallet.

On another note... Don't take your milsim too seriously... Unless you have a prior service guy running it, I guarantee you're not simulating jack squat.

Why not wear a salvation army patch. Sounds like you would do well.

Disrespectful? Try illegal while wielding what looks like a real weapon. It's illegal even if you are in the rangers and dress like that off duty carrying airsoft.
